SonoCat multifunctional acoustic measurement device - on-site sound source location, detection of sound pressure & sound intensity & material surface sound absorption effect parameters.

Make complex on-site noise measurement work easier!

In our living environment, there are many sources of noise, and some noises can interfere with our lives and even affect our health. Therefore, we need to identify the noise sources that impact our lives. However, the impact of noise is related to the listener's state and the way noise propagates, so we need measurement work to identify the problematic noise sources. Since measurement work is usually conducted in experiments, and laboratory measurement conditions may be limited by the environment, leading to discrepancies between measurement conditions and results compared to reality, we need on-site measurement equipment to obtain actual results.

SonoCat is a multifunctional spherical microphone array (see the figure below) composed of a set of 8 MEMs microphones for measurement. It can obtain the sound level (sound pressure level), 3D sound intensity vector, and surface material sound absorption coefficient from the measurement results. SonoCat can operate in two modes: single-point measurement and scanning measurement. In single-point measurement mode, we can measure the three-dimensional sound intensity vector at that location to find the sound source position; through scanning mode, we can obtain the average absorption coefficient of the measured surface material. SonoCat connects to a computer or tablet via USB cable, and through the SonoCat software, we can directly monitor, record, and analyze noise issues on-site.

Sound Absorption Coefficient Measurement Principle

The sound absorption coefficient of a material is defined by the ratio of the sound's active power to the incident power. However, the testing conditions on-site and in the laboratory may not be the same, and laboratory measurement results may deviate from on-site conditions. SonoCat is based on the Local Plane-Wave Method principle. We assume that the sound intensity components at the measurement point perpendicular to the measurement surface are plane waves of incident and reflected sound. As long as we measure positions close to the wall surface, we can assume that the plane wave is near the wall surface, allowing us to derive the on-site sound absorption coefficient of the wall material. Therefore, sound absorption coefficient measurement work is no longer limited to the laboratory; we can measure directly on-site!

Product Features

  • Sound Level Measurement – Can measure A, C, and Z-weighted sound levels, calculated according to IEC 61672-1 standards.
  • Material Sound Absorption Coefficient Measurement
  • Sound Source Location – If the Active Power measurement result is negative, it indicates that the sound energy from the material surface is stronger than the incident energy, indicating a sound source (e.g., vibration noise source, leakage location).

Product Applications:

  • On-site Material Sound Absorption Coefficient Measurement
  • Sound Source Location
